Rooted at B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan, PSRN brings students and healthcare professionals together around a simple conviction: caring for people means caring for the world they live in.
Physicians for Social Responsibility Nepal (PSRN) traces its establishment to 2007 at B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Dharan. It grew around an understanding that the responsibility of future doctors and health professionals extends beyond individual clinical encounters.
Within a teaching institution dedicated to health sciences, this spirit connected students and mentors who wanted to engage with wider questions: how to prevent illness, serve communities, protect the environment and contribute to peace.
Today, the PSRN Students' Chapter at BPKIHS carries that ethos into student-led activities, public-health education, community initiatives and opportunities to learn from a broader network of peace-minded healthcare professionals.
Healthcare is not only about treating disease. It is also about protecting the conditions in which people can live healthier, safer lives.
Our history is grounded in the commitment of mentors who helped establish a culture of social responsibility and peace-oriented healthcare education at BPKIHS.
Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, BPKIHS
Orthopaedic Surgeon and Former Vice Chancellor, Karnali Academy of Health Sciences
We aim to connect medical and health-sciences education with informed action in the communities around us.
Promoting health education, screening awareness, preventive care and meaningful outreach with communities.
Seeing violence, conflict and threats to human safety as issues that also demand public-health leadership.
Encouraging a healthier relationship between people, climate, environment and the conditions that support wellbeing.
PSRN BPKIHS is affiliated with and inspired by the work of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), a global organization promoting health and peace.
Our chapter has participated in international conferences, student exchanges, and peace initiatives. Dr. Bimal Khadka, a BPKIHS alumnus, has also served on the IPPNW Central Board.
From the founding of PSRN at BPKIHS to today's student leadership, every generation has carried forward a shared commitment to health, peace, and service.
